This is my third growth letter and it sheds light on how to market your brand effectively using Pinterest. The tips and strategies shared in this growth letter are based on my experience with marketing brands on Pinterest.

Pinterest Marketing

While working on Mirakee (my second startup), I built an automated acquisition engine via Pinterest. More than 100 Mirakee users pinned their posts (made on Mirakee) on the “Writers of Mirakee” Pinterest board.

Pinterest Statistics

Women use Pinterest more than men and fashion brands love Pinterest. I use Pinterest a lot, but all my *important* boards are private. I use Pinterest to curate ideas, tips, resources, products, and more. 

Have a look at these Pinterest statistics:

  • The average time spent on Pinterest is 14.2 minutes (per session)

  • 85% of Pinterest users access the channel via mobile

  • 78% of users say content from brands is useful, including ads

  • 52% of US millennials use Pinterest every month

  • 71% of global Pinterest users are female

  • Pinterest is now the third-largest social network in the U.S.

  • Shopping is a top priority for 48% of Pinterest users

Pinterest Marketing Tips and Strategies

  1. Pinterest is basically a search engine. You must think of a pin as a web page and a board as a directory. You need to optimize your pins and boards like you optimize your web pages for search engines.

    For the pins and boards you create, use keyword phrases in pin titles and descriptions as well as in the title of your boards. An easy way to find the keyword phrases is by entering a part of the keyword phrase in the search bar. You will see a list of keyword suggestions.

  2. Pin frequently - more than 5 times a day. Repin other pins. Keep your boards organized. It is simple but not easy!

  3. Infographics work well on Pinterest. Create Infographics using Visme and pin them on your boards. Don’t forget to work on including relevant keyword phrases in the title and description of the pins. Use tools like Canva and Piktochart to create Infographics.

  4. Comment on top pins for your account to get some eyeballs.

  5. Embed your boards on your blog or website. Details here.

  6. Pin on other boards. Message owners of relevant boards that you’d like to pin your content to their boards. Collaboration looks simple but it is not easy! Before sending them a message, pin a few of their pins on your boards, follow their account, and comment on their pins. Everyone loves being loved. Use Pingroupie to find groups on which you can collaborate.

  7. Work on the visual aspect of the pin. Let’s say you want to pin your blog article. Have an infographic in your blog which summarises the blog. While pinning, select this infographic as the image of your pin. This way, you pin will get pinned on other boards more often. Create the right-sized images.

  8. Have a “Pin” button on your web pages for the visitors to directly pin from your web pages. Details here.

  9. Have multiple pins pointing to the same source. Have different pin descriptions for the pins. Example - Have many short infographics, one for each section. While pinning multiple times, select a different infographic as the pin image and have different pin descriptions according to the infographic (section of the web page).

  10. Consider creating multiple sections on your board if the topic of your board is broad. Pin to relevant sections.

  11. Leverage the power of video pins. Video pins are hot. Use video pins.

  12. Use Rich Pins for your website or blog. Using “Rich Pins”, you can display more details on your pins. There are 5 types of rich pins: Article, Product, Recipe, Movie, and Place.

    Here’s a rich pin showing the price of the product. Rich pins only appear for sites that are validated by Pinterest. Use the Rich Pins Validator tool for validating your website. Buffer has a complete guide on how to effectively use Rich Pins.
